Franklinton residents lack nearby grocers or transportation to full-service stores, making it very difficult to find fresh fruits and vegetables. Without access to fresh produce, our neighbors are left with little more than prepackaged convenience items sold at corner stores.Limited food access has had a negative impact on the health of our neighborhood. A high rate of Franklinton residents suffer from various diet-related health issues, such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.
Franklinton Gardens is currently working on a project called Fresh Foods Here in order to increase healthful, affordable food options in our neighborhood. This project educates residents on the importance of healthful foods and works with various corner stores to enhance their inventories with fresh fruits and vegetables.
Three corner stores--Family Market, Broad & Princeton Market, and Herbert's Market--are currently making physical improvements to their stores and increasing their inventory of healthy foods with the help of Fresh Foods Here. Look for the Fresh Foods Here logo at these locations in the coming weeks.
Fresh Foods Here is a project of the Healthy Corner Store Collaborative--Columbus Public Health, Franklinton Gardens, Local Matters, The Ohio State University Center for Farmland Policy Innovation, and United Way of Central Ohio.
